Admissions

When we consider children for Cornfield School, we expect to see a lot of alarming and negative behaviours detailed in the paperwork!

As an example of our inclusive and equal opportunities policies and good practice, we will give each and every child an informal look around the school and interview, and the opportunity to demonstrate that they are looking for a fresh start. This will conducted by the Headteacher, Looked After/Behaviour Support/ Induction Manager, and school SENCO.

We look closely at whether a child has matured sufficiently to reflect on, and be willing to begin to make changes to certain attitudes and behaviours which has got them to this point. We want our pupils to reinvest and value their own learning, and they will need to show respect for some non-negotiable rules and boundaries – for example it is an expectation that pupil’s wear uniform, follow the timetable as directed, be on task and in lessons, and complete homework.

But, within this structure there is a lot of nurture and support from Induction to small class sizes ( 3-6) with dedicated class teaching assistant and strong tutor and pastoral system. Even if your child has been out of school for some time, most nerves quickly disappear. New girls are admitted throughout the school year. The child will quickly recognise that the school is a safe, friendly and happy place to be, with everyone getting along with their courses, learning and afternoon enrichment activities.

In such a small community, any potential signs of unkindness or bullying will be noticed and nipped in the bud. All new students will have a formal induction, risk assessment, behaviour support and baseline cognitive and subject based assessments, and may try different class groups before finding the best fit. In the case of day girls, the Headteacher is happy to agree to a term’s assessment and trial period (on both sides). All potential Placing Authorities are welcome to visit the school, bringing social worker, parent, step-parent, friend, carer etc to assess whether it is the right school and atmosphere for their child.

The Headteacher will be proud to show you the progress pupils make in this happy and successful small school. Residential placements with Cornfield schooling -contact Viv Spence (Proprietor) on 01293 826840 email: admin@cornerways.org Day placements: Contact Jayne Telfer (Headteacher)/ Helen Everton (Headteacher’s PA) on 01737 779578 email cornfieldschool@cornerways.org
